Sami

Sami

Sami, which is 22 km. from Argostoli, is the largest harbour on the island. There are services from here to Italy, and the port is a great centre of tourist traffic and has a good infrastructure. There are also services from here to Piso Aeto on Ithaka and Astakos in Aitoloakarnania (continental Greece). The bay of Sami has also several sights worth seeing and fine beaches.

Ancient Sami, on of the four powerful ancient cities on Kefalonia, was on the Ag. Phanentes hill, as is clear from the preserved remains of Cyclopean walls here. On the same site there is also a section of Hellenistic fortifications and the ruins of the monastery of the Ag. Phanentes.
A short distance away from the remains of an ancient theatre and various tombs have been found. A Roman bathhouse with mosaic floors and a bronze head dating from AD 3000 has also been excavated in the area of Sami. The head is on display in the Archaeological Museum of Argostoli.
