Not far from the banks of the Koutavos lagoon rises the hill of ancient Krani, with ruins of walls and a few vestiges of the Doric temple of Demeter. On this hill also stands the aqueduct of Argostoli, known to the locals as neromana.
At a distance of 2.5 kms north of Argostoli are the sites of the famous katavothres, or sink holes, a rare geological phenomenon, in which the sea water enters crevices along the coast and disappears. Research carried out with the aid of coloured substances and radioisotopes resulted in the discovery of these same waters outside the village of Karavomilos in Sami. At the katavothres there is a picturesque water-mill and a tourist pavilion.
At the end of the Lassi peninsula stands the lighthouse, which was built by the British in 1820, destroyed by the earthquakes in 1953 and later rebuilt according to its old plans. It lends a romantic colour to this peaceful spot of the island which is famous for its superb sunsets.
