Drogarati Cave on Kefalonia

Kefalonia Drogarati Cave

The cave of Drogarati is about 5 km to the south of Sami, on the main Sami-Argostoli road.
Although it had long been known to the inhabitants of the area, the cave was only opened to the public in 1963. Visitors admire the wonderful stalactites and stalagmites that give it such colourful decoration.

The Drogarati Cave, which is also called the Concert Cave, consists of two parts, the first of which was once an extension of the main cave. Its roof collapsed, however, transforming it into a depression in the ground. The part of the cave that is now open to the public consists of a large chamber about 100 m. long. This is divided into two areas by massive stone blocks that have broken away from the roof, forming a natural platform decorated with translucent stalactites, called the Royal Balcony. Below this balcony extends the second area, called the Apotheosis Room. This is a semicircular hall measuring 65x45 m. and 20 m. high, the vault of which is richly decorated with stalactites. It has exceptionally good acoustics and has been converted into a concert hall seating an audience of 500.
