Around Sami

The aera around Sami is characterised by various interesting and unusual geological phenomena. At Karavomilos the sea waters which disappear into the Argostoli sink-holes re-emerge. This is the Karavomilos spring, and its water is brackish due to the fact that along the way the fresh water becomes mixed with sea water. At a short distance from Karavomilos we find the Melissani Lake (3.5 kilometers from Sami). A large part of the roof has caved in, affording the visitors who looks down from above a superb view of the extraordinary colours of the water, particularly during the mid-day hours when the sun is directly overhead. Along the walls of the cave are many stalactites.

Near the road leading to the village of Poulata, we find the deep cavern of Angalaki, with its galleries and lakes.

Further north, the cavern of Agioi Theodoroi. To the west, is the chasm of Agia Eleousa in a verdant setting. Near the village of Nea Vlachata there is another deep cave, that of Zervati, with lakes of fresh water.
